It is a pleasure to welcome you to the Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, where the education of tomorrow's scientific leaders is one our greatest accomplishments. Over the last ten years, we have witnessed remarkable growth and development in our dual missions of teaching and research.

In keeping with the University mission - to provide education as a balance of intellect and personal values - we offer a unique 10-week summer undergraduate research program that includes seminars, outreach programs, ethics training, and social activities. Students work side-by-side with faculty, graduate students, and research fellows toward breakthroughs in molecular genetics, computational chemistry, developmental biology, materials research, and in many other fields.

Our outstanding and committed professors in the Bayer School currently receive more than $2 million in external funding each year from agencies such as the NIH, the NSF, and the Department of Energy to support their research. Inspired by their faculty mentors, most students elect to continue their research throughout the academic year, and many of them appear as co-authors on peer-reviewed publications and have the opportunity to travel to national meetings to present their research.

Our excellent and well-established bachelor's programs in biological sciences, in chemistry and biochemistry, and in physics emphasize novel integrated laboratory experiences, through which students learn the most modern experimental techniques using state-of-the-art instrumentation. We offer a B.S. degree in Environmental Science, and in close collaboration with the School of Law and the Cyril Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law, we also offer a unique five-year entry-level Master's degree in Forensic Science and Law. Students may tailor their education through dual-degree options, which combine a Bachelor of Science degree with a Master's degree in environmental science and management or education. A binary engineering program is available that combines a bachelor's degree in physics with an engineering degree from one of our partner engineering schools.

An undergraduate science education at Duquesne reaches beyond professional and technical knowledge. It includes a broad liberal arts experience where spiritual and ethical values are emphasized. Students in the Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences will find strong academic and campus support, where each student is assigned both an academic advisor and a faculty mentor, who are available for advice and guidance in curriculum and career decisions.

High-quality graduate education is a priority in the Bayer School, and we are proud of our nationally and internationally recognized M.S. and Ph.D. programs in both biological sciences and chemistry and biochemistry. The M.S. in Environmental Science and Management prepares students for a variety of careers in the environmental profession, and an online M.S. program in Environmental Management offers greater flexibility for working professionals.
