The Master of Science in Environmental Science and Management (MS-ESM) features a diverse curriculum that integrates a strong foundation in basic sciences with related disciplines that inform management practices. This 36-credit program includes in-depth study of:
environmental biology, chemistry and toxicology;
environmental policy, regulations and laws;
pollution prevention and control of water, air and solid and hazardous waste;
management, writing, public relations and conflict resolution; and
choice of two electives, such as field biology, sampling, sustainable business and hydrogeology.
Students who do not have professional experience launch their careers by completing internships; a thesis track exists for those considering research or doctoral education. Students who are currently working professionals in the environmental field may request experiential learning credits.

The MS-ESM is based on Duquesne University's urban campus in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Courses are offered weekday evenings and occasional Saturdays to meet the needs of working professionals. Part-time students who take about two classes per semester can complete the degree in approximately two calendar years, while others choose to take one course per semester. The program also welcomes full-time students, including recent graduates with bachelor's degrees in the sciences or related disciplines.
We know each student by name. Each student receives individualized attention from a graduate advisor who is regularly available for meetings before evening classes. The advisor works with students to help them track their academic progress in the program. All new students have assistance in creating a study plan that will help them meet their goals.
The program director and other faculty provide more in-depth course advisement as well as career mentoring. With the average class size less than 12 students, you can expect a high degree of student-faculty interaction. The faculty includes researchers from the Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, as well as seasoned environmental professionals who are currently practicing in the field. They provide instruction that is based on real-world experience.
In a global environment, it's important to have international connections.
The Environmental Science and Management Program has attracted students from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe and the Middle East. During the typical academic year, international students make up 10% of the student population, including students under the prestigious Fulbright and Muskie programs.
Individual ESM students have studied abroad at the University of Cologne in Germany and the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. The unique Environmental Science Experience in China takes Duquesne students on an educational journey with ESM faculty to the other side of the world, with Chinese university students as their companions.
ESM professors have also forged international partnerships by teaching at the University of Cologne and in other institutions throughout Eastern Europe, working with various organizations to create a better environment the world over.
Our students know each other by name. Imagine a classroom where you look around and know everyone's name. That's reality in the ESM program. Small class sizes foster an atmosphere of teamwork, and group projects create camaraderie.
The diverse student population increases opportunities for learning and networking. Around 25% of ESM students enter the program directly from undergraduate studies; the remainder range in employment level from entry-level to management.
Because so many students are working professionals, friendships in the classroom often become connections in the workplace. After graduation, students become part of an extensive alumni network of 300+ leaders in the environmental field. Successful alumni often become important career contacts for more recent graduates.
