Research in our group focuses on homogenous and heterogeneous catalysis and includes various aspects of inorganic, organometallic and polymer chemistry. In particular, we are interested in developing novel catalytic systems for radical copolymerization of olefins and polar monomers. This approach to radical copolymerization is based on changing the reactivity ratios through selective complexation of monomers with the transition metal complexes. The rational development of catalytic systems involves fundamental understanding of parameters that affect metal-olefin (polar monomer) and metal-alkyl bond strengths. Also, we are exploring synthetic routes for the preparation of well-defined amino acid functionalized poly(dienes) which can be used in the areas of catalysis, molecular recognition, drug delivery and metal removal. In conjunction with the above projects, we are also interested in the synthesis and characterization of hydrogen donor and hydrogen acceptor transition metal complexes and their applications in reversible solid supported catalysis and synthesis of supramolecular structures.
