Summer Workshop

Summer 2009 Forensic Science and Law Workshop

The professional Forensic Science and Law fraternity Phi Sigma Lambda invites you to apply for our Sixth Annual Forensic Science and Law Workshop at Duquesne University this summer!

Students and faculty of the Bayer School Forensic Science and Law program in participation with the Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law will be offering a three-day workshop, held on July 20 – 22, 2009. Approximately 20 high school students from Pittsburgh and the surrounding area will be selected to participate.

Workshop topics will include:

  • Evidence Collection (lecture)
  • Fingerprints (lab)
  • Arson Investigation (lecture)
  • Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC)(lab)
  • Toxicology (lecture)
  • Hair & Fiber Analysis (lab)
  • Famous Cases (lecture)
  • Body Decomposition (lecture)
  • Firearms and Toolmarks (lab)
  • Eyewitness Identification (lecture)
  • DNA Fingerprinting (lecture)
  • Mock Crime Scene

Dates –July 20 – 22, 2009

Time – 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. daily

Location – Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Cost – $80 participation fee (includes complimentary t-shirt and all breakfasts and lunches)

Applicants must be high school juniors or seniors as of Fall 2009 and have a strong interest in the sciences. Consideration will be given to exceptional sophomore students.  Applicants also must have at least a 2.5 GPA. All application forms are reviewed on a first-come basis; those received by May 9, 2009 will take priority. All applications must be postmarked by the final deadline of June 13, 2009. Students who are selected to participate in the Forensic Science and Law Workshop will be notified prior to July 1, 2009.  A detailed schedule and additional information about the Forensic Science and Law Workshop will be mailed with the acceptance letter. Phi Sigma Lambda requests a $40 deposit fee at the time of acceptance, and the balance must be paid at registration on July 20. Housing is available for out-of-town students at an additional cost.
