The entry-level Master of Science in Forensic Science and Law at Duquesne University answers a critical need for skilled professionals in this exciting yet challenging field. This five-year program of rigorous study is open to graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated an interest in the sciences and their application to the civil and criminal justice systems. The program’s faculty includes professors from both the Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences and Duquesne University’s prestigious Law School, making it the only one of its kind in the nation.
The Master of Science in Forensic Science and Law is offered in partnership with the Cyril H. Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law. The institute was established within Duquesne University’s School of Law through the efforts of Dr. Cyril H. Wecht, former Allegheny County Coroner and one of the world’s leading medical-legal consultants. Dr. Wecht chairs the institute’s advisory board, which also includes other internationally renowned experts in forensic science: Dr. Henry Lee, Dr. Michael Baden, Dr. Michael Welner, Dr. Thomas Noguchi, Professor Barry C. Scheck and Professor James E. Starrs. Students in the program enjoy special guest lectures by members of the institute’s advisory board throughout the course of their studies.
Recent developments in scientific research and technology have revolutionized the pursuit of justice. The role of the forensic scientist is to uncover the facts that lead to the truth. He or she must be highly trained to apply scientific principles and techniques to the analysis of evidence. At the same time, this individual must understand the legal framework in which the science is utilized.
