2008 URP Application Requirements

Applicants for the Summer 2008 Undergraduate Research Program and the Chemistry & Biochemistry REU may work in the Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences or the Mylan School of Pharmacy. Please submit only one application. The committee will consider each applicant for all eligible funds. A complete application includes:

  • Application Cover Sheet
    Students are encouraged to complete the cover sheet online and as soon as possible to allow for tracking of application materials. All spaces must be completed. When using this form, please fill out appropriately.
  • Copy of your most recent transcript
    Duquesne students - Order an Advisement copy of your transcript. All transcripts must be ordered from Duquesne's Registrar's Office (at no charge) by Monday, February 18, 2008. Please clearly indicate that you are ordering the transcript for the Undergraduate Research Program and the transcript should be sent directly to Philip Clarke, 100 Mellon Hall.
    External students - Order an official transcript from your university registrar. The transcript must arrive by March 3, 2008. The transcript should be sent directly to Undergraduate Research Program, 100 Mellon Hall, Pittsburgh, PA 15282.
  • Two letters of recommendation
    Letters should be from faculty or professionals who can assess your ability to do research. All recommendations must be requested from faculty by February 8, 2008 to ensure arrival by March 3, 2008.
  • Resume
    Resumes should be one page in length.
  • Statement of goals
    The statement of goals should be submitted on a separate sheet of paper, no longer than one page, and single spaced. Include your reasons for wanting to do research, how you feel this program will benefit you, and a short list of faculty whose research interests you. Faculty research interests can be found at science.duq.edu. If you are currently working on a research project, please limit the description of the project to one paragraph. Statements are very important to the selection process.

All application materials must be e-mailed in Microsoft Word to urp@duq.edu by March 3, 2008. Students will be notified of decisions by mail on April 4, 2008. For further information call (412) 396-4172 or write to urp@duq.edu.

Students selected for the Undergraduate Research Program are required to complete ten weeks of research from May 19 to July 25, 2008, a safety lecture, participate in the summer symposium, complete a community service project in the area of science, attend summer speaker seminars, and participate in the Ethics Forum. Students will earn a stipend of at least $3,300 for the ten-week period.
