Outreach Activities

Information is available on outreach programs specific to the sciences. We currently have a Visiting Scientist Program where faculty members from Duquesne give talks in a high school setting. In addition, the Undergraduate Research Program students are participating in various community service activities. These programs was designed by the Bayer School of Natural & Environmental Sciences research students.

Students interested in outreach should contact one of the following organizations. Many more options will be available in the coming year.

ASSET Program : ASSET Inc. is a National Science Foundation funded project for improving elementary science in 16 Allegheny County school districts. It is a partnership between industry, educational institutions and school districts to provide necessary materials, support, training, assessment and community involvement to reform how science is taught. Duquesne University students provided 175 hours of volunteer work last quarter. The Development Office organizes a large volunteer week in that fall and summer, but students are welcome at any time. In addition, ASSET usually has a few paid internships each year.

RiverQuest: Pittsburgh Voyager is a nonprofit educational organization which provides innovative, river-themed programs for young and old alike on the Voyager vessel. These interactive cruises include It's Alive, an ecology format that introduces participants to the river's web of life; The Bridges of Pittsburgh, a program devoted to Pittsburgh's bridges and structural history; Traveling the Nautical Road, an introduction to our vessel and river navigation; and Island Hopping in the Burgh, an adventure in history and Pittsburgh's changing shorelines. Many Duquesne students have been volunteer interns on the Voyager vessel and have grown progressively into confident, knowledgeable and motivated speakers and educators. The Voyager also has a few paid internships each year.

Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair : The 69th Annual Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be held at Heinz Field on April 4 and April 5, 2008.  An open competition of research projects in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering will be featured by local students.   Duquesne University faculty, staff and students volunteer prior to and during the Science and Engineering Fair. This competition is free to all students in grades 6-12 in public and non-public schools throughout 24 counties within Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia . The students present their research via a presentation board and interview.
